2016 Nissan XTrail Review

Nissan’s popular contribution needs no introduction.  This specific third-generation NT32 model Xtrail is a looker. If you value practicality over everything else, we know you have checked out Japanese SUVs and have come across this vehicle. Noticeably cheaper than competitors such as the Toyota Harrier and the Honda CRV, while being just as capable, this is the car to buy.

What’s New?

Abandoning its previous boxy design, the NT32 has a gorgeous curvy exterior with much more refined lines and road presence. The interior of this car also gets a complete redesign moving from a functionality-themed plain interior to a comfortable, classy well-made cabin. This is also the first iteration of the X-Trail to have an option of a 3rd row which comes in handy when ferrying multiple people, especially the young ones.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

This is by no means the quickest, nor punchiest car. Like most mid-size SUVs from Japan, the Xtrail comes standard with a 2 liter 4-cylinder engine producing around 140 horsepower and 200nm of torque.

The fact that you will not be racing does not mean however that it is slow or underpowered. These figures fall squarely into the range of most of its competitors. With 4-wheel drive as standard, the Xtrail will ferry you and your passengers to anywhere you desire that has tarmac or murram. In most situations, the 4wd system is capable enough to get you to your rural home, or remote land with ease.

The Xtrail comes standard with a CVT gearbox. If you are keen enough, you must have heard lots of stories about avoiding Nissans with CVTs and how they are a money pit. I assure you however, with la little research, correct maintenance practices and a competent mechanic, this smooth gearbox will easily last you the vehicles lifetime.

Interior, Comfort and Cargo

This is where the Xtrail gains almost all of its praise. Sitting at 4.6 meters long and 1.8m wide, legroom and headroom are splendid with both the front and rear passengers having roughly 100mm of both. The cabin feels airy and the views out of the window are great.

The Xtrail comes equipped with leather seats that are electronically powered at the front with seat heating being an option too. The leather is soft yet durable and the upholstery is neat. We have dual zone Air conditioning for both front and rear passengers to keep you feeling fresh even on long trips. Comfort features such as sunroof are also available.

In terms of cargo space, your goods shall comfortably fit in the trunk of the NT32. The car has 550 liters of cargo space that becomes 2000 liters when the rear seats are folded down. Did someone say mini-pickup? And for the full load days where all 3 rows are in use, there remains 135 liters of space for some light luggage.

This is well and truly a car designed around people being inside it.

Infotainment and Connectivity

In terms of navigation, the NT32 has satellite navigation but will most probably be in the Japanese import language and of no use unless an upgrade is done.

Apple Car Play and Android Auto are also not a feature here.

However, the standard radio is equipped with both Bluetooth and aux so it is not entirely the stone age.

The multi-functional steering wheel also enables smooth navigation of both the sound and navigation menus without taking one’s eyes off the road

This car comes with a basic sound system with enough speakers to hear the music to the 3rd row unlike the Murano which comes with carwings system as standard.

The Nissan Xtrail is indeed an excellent choice for anyone looking for a practical SUV. You can get many options of the Nissan X-Trail from Garisea.com.
