2017 Mercedes-Benz GLE Review

The Mercedes-Benz GLE-class is undeniably attractive inside and out, and it delivers the power and prestige expected from an SUV with the three-pointed star on its front grille. Available with a wide range of engines, including AMG-tuned variants (which we report about separately), the GLE faces a strong lineup of rivals that includes the Lexus RX, BMW X5, Cadillac XT5, Acura MDX, and Volvo XC90. Unlike some of its competitors, the GLE is strictly a five-passenger sporty-utility, with no optional third row of seats. Fuel mileage isn’t forgotten, however, and the standard turbocharged V-6 delivers a solid balance of performance and economy. For even better fuel economy, a GLE-class plug-in hybrid version is also available.

What’s New for 2017?

Mercedes-Benz has dropped the previously available turbodiesel powertrain from the GLE lineup. In terms of new additions, a rearview camera is now standard on all trims.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Starting with the base GLE model, a Mercedes buyer gets a 302-hp 3.5-liter V-6 paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission and choice of rear- or all-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is standard with the optional twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6, which puts out 329 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. The added grip of all-wheel drive is also standard on the plug-in hybrid version of the GLE, which is motivated by a 3.0-liter V-6 coupled to an 85-kilowatt electric motor. Combined output is an impressive 436 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. This is more than enough to get this fuel-sipping SUV down the road in a hurry, plus there’s 10 miles of electric-only driving range. In terms of its ride and handling characteristics, let’s stress that the GLE-class is far more tuned towards the comfort end of the luxury spectrum. The steering is overly light and, while the GLE soaks up bumps in the road and is adept at venturing off road, this Mercedes SUV simply doesn’t have the degree of athleticism found in a number of competitors.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

While the GLE doesn’t inspire you to attack curvy roads with gusto, the cabin certainly inspires you to relax and enjoy the ride. There is plenty of room no matter where you’re seated, and cargo space isn’t hindered by a bulky third row—though some might view the lack of extra seating as a serious demerit. Behind the second row there’s a sizable 38.2 cubic feet of cargo volume.

The GLE 350 comes standard with synthetic leather seating surfaces, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, a sunroof, and a power-operated liftgate. Higher trims add such features as genuine leather upholstery and an upgraded infotainment system. While it’s true that the GLE’s driving experience leaves something to be desired, the interior is hushed, and the soft ride is a bonus for long drives or commutes over pockmarked roads.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The base GLE is fitted with a 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, Bluetooth, USB ports, and an eight-speaker stereo with CD player. Most Mercedes buyers will likely choose the available 8.0-inch screen, which includes SiriusXM satellite radio, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. A rear-seat entertainment system is offered to keep those seated in back amused on long trips.
